Viewing Full Mail Headers with Outlook Express

When tracking down email problems with particular messages or spam and abuse complaints, it is often helpfull to view, or send support@junctionbox.net the Full Headers of the email message.

Full Headers are often stripped off by your Email program because most of the time you don't need them. They include information about where the email originated, what path it took through the Internet, and how long it took to get to each step. To view full headers, follow the instructions below.

  1. If your Outlook Express isn't open, open it now and click on the folder with the mail message in it.

  2. Double-click on the message that you want to view the full headers on. That opens the message in it's own window and allows you access to view options for this particular message.

  3. From the File menu select Properties. Then click on the Details tab. The Details tab displays the Internet Headers for this message. Cut and Paste the headers from that window into a new message to send it to Junctionbox.

Tech tip:   Outlook Express has a View Headers option that is similar to the one in Outlook, but it doesn't actually display the Internet Headers for your message.Always use this procedure in Outlook Express to view Internet Headers.
